Sostenibilidad en Costa Rica: Por Qué Elegir un Eco-Resort
Qué es un eco-resort y por qué importa. Sostenibilidad real, aguas termominerales y productos locales en El Tucano Resort & Thermal Spa, La Fortuna.
Volcanic aquifers under the Arenal system feed our pools with mineral water at 36–41 °C — the same water that soothed indigenous Maleku healers a thousand years before it filled our first stone basin. No chlorinated pools. Only geothermal water, cooled to your comfort.
Fifteen minutes in this water lowers cortisol as measurably as a full night of sleep.Reserve your thermal soak

“We compared El Tucano to Tabacón and Nayara — and picked El Tucano because the pools are actually mineral-fed, not heated tanks. You feel it on your skin. Staff greeted us by name after day one. Coming back with the kids in December.”
“Booked the Junior Suite for our anniversary. The adults-only pool at sunset with the mineral river running past — perfect. Restaurant food surprised us — the sea bass was as good as San José fine dining. Free 48h cancellation was a relief.”
“Three children, one grandmother, and a warm shallow pool with volcanic water — we barely left the property. Buffet breakfast has real fruit, real bread, real coffee. Front desk arranged our SJO transfer and it arrived on the minute.”
“Booked the volcanic clay ritual — 90 minutes, private thermal pool included after, botanical products smelled real, not perfumed. Nayara Springs charges triple for less. Will send my sister.”
“Skipped La Fortuna proper because the drive from Liberia is brutal. El Tucano is much closer to San José, the road is decent, and honestly the setting is more peaceful than the town resorts. Best-rate guarantee saved me $70/night vs. Booking.”
“Costa Rica sin la parte turística industrializada. La familia dueña sigue en el lobby saludando huéspedes. El desayuno con vista al bosque, monos aulladores en la mañana, agua termal de verdad. Un poco más lento el Wi-Fi en las suites lejanas.”
The specific answers foreign travelers want before crossing borders.
No — US, Canada, UK, and EU passports enter Costa Rica visa-free for 90 days. You will need a valid passport and a return ticket. That is the entire process.
SJO (San José) is about 2.5 hours by road; LIR (Liberia) is about 3 hours. We arrange private transfer from either airport at flat USD pricing when you book — no local Uber roulette.
Nightly rate includes 13% IVA tax, unlimited access to our thermal pools, breakfast for two, welcome cocktail, and Wi-Fi. No resort fees. Ever.
Yes. The rate shown is in USD with taxes included. USD is accepted at the property, along with all major credit cards. Colones (CRC) are also welcome.
Free cancellation up to 48 hours before check-in. Inside 48 hours, one night is charged. No-shows are charged in full. That is the whole policy.
Yes. Standard and Junior Suite rooms are family-sized. We have a shallow warm-water family pool and a rainforest activity program for kids. Adults-only quiet-pool zones are available for couples who prefer it.
December through April is dry season (peak). May through November is green season — brief afternoon rain, quieter resort, best rates. Both are excellent for the thermal springs.
Quieter, smaller (7 room types, not 100+), closer to SJO for easier arrivals, meaningfully less expensive than Nayara Springs, and every pool here is naturally geothermal — not chlorinated or heated. We are the boutique alternative to the mega-resorts.
Volcano-fed water. Rainforest quiet. San Carlos hospitality.
